The transformation of the hair industry calls for renewal

The future of the hair industry: hair wellness, scalp care, and the salon customer experience.

Lately, I have found myself returning more and more to the same thought: the hair industry is changing permanently. This shift has not happened overnight. It has gradually become part of our everyday reality as wider beauty trends, such as skinification have also started to shape the way we talk about hair, the scalp and their overall wellbeing.

Hair is no longer only about appearance. For many, it has become part of personal wellbeing and a way to express who they are. Hair is increasingly approached in a more holistic way: the focus is not only on how it looks, but also on how it feels, how it fits into everyday life and how it supports personal identity.

And at the same time, this is changing our entire industry.

Wellbeing is visible in hair

One of the strongest shifts I see around me is the rise of hair health at the centre of the hair conversation. Consumers are no longer asking only about the end result, they want to understand what is genuinely good for their hair and scalp.

People are paying much closer attention to the condition of their hair and scalp than they did just a few years ago. They are looking for solutions that are gentle, support long-term hair wellbeing and fit their individual life situation. To me, this is an extremely positive direction. It moves the focus away from quick fixes and towards more sustainable thinking.

A salon visit is an encounter, not just a service

At the same time a salon visit has increasingly become an encounter. It is not simply a single service, but a moment where the professional and the client pause together. At its best, it is a holistic hair and scalp experience. One that does not begin with ready-made answers, but with the right questions.

What does your hair need right now?
How does your hair feel in everyday life?
What works for you in the long term?

Consultation plays a key role here. Genuine listening and understanding create the foundation for solutions that are not generic, but truly individual. I believe this is where the value of the professional becomes most visible.

Consumers expect more, and they deserve it

Consumer behaviour has changed rapidly. Clients are more informed; they search for information, find inspiration and compare options. But above all, they expect more.

They expect their hair to be seen individually: solutions built around their needs, with the professional helping them see the bigger picture, not just a single salon visit. At the same time, the development of the industry supports this direction. Caring solutions and services that support hair wellbeing continue to grow and evolve.

Now is the right time to stand out

I believe we are living through an exceptionally interesting time in the hair industry. A moment where it is possible to choose the direction. Standing out is not created by technical skill alone, although it remains the foundation of everything. It is created by how the client is met, how they are listened to and how their needs are understood. It is created by having the courage to build services that support the client’s holistic wellbeing.

And perhaps even more importantly, by having the courage to do things a little differently than before.

The future is personal

When I think about the future of the hair industry, one thing feels certain: it will become increasingly personal. There is no single solution that works for everyone. There are countless different hair types, scalps, lifestyles and needs. That is why our role is changing too. We are increasingly becoming experts who combine knowledge, experience and the skill of listening.

It makes this work more meaningful than perhaps ever before.

And that is exactly why I believe now is the right moment to pause, look at our own work with fresh eyes and consider how we want to take part in building this new direction for the hair industry.
